At peak training, around 8,300m a day, total mood disturbance was up and anaerobic swimming power was down by 9.4%. By the taper assessment, at 2,300m a day, all of it was back to baseline. That suggests the low mood early in a taper is largely the tail of the hard weeks you have just finished, and the taper is where it lifts.

Why You Feel Worse During Your Taper

The Fatigue Is Still Leaving

The fitness, fatigue and form numbers in intervals.icu are two running averages of your training load. Your Legs Really Are Heavier

Glycogen is not stored dry: each gram of it sits in muscle with at least 3g of water .

So your legs genuinely carry more fuel and water in taper week, which is part of why an easy run can feel wooden. It is unlikely to be the whole explanation, but it is a real one.

The Easy Weeks Take the Edge Off

You Have More Time to Notice Every Twinge

Phantom pains are a staple of taper threads online: a knee, an Achilles, a hip that has never complained before, gone by the next morning. A classic experiment shows a likely mechanism, even though it had nothing to do with tapering. At an identical treadmill workload, people hearing their own breathing amplified  reported more fatigue and more physical symptoms than people hearing distracting sounds. Attention pointed inwards makes the same body feel worse.

A taper hands you those conditions: fewer and shorter sessions, more free evenings, and a race you care about at the end of it. A pain that moves around and eases once you are warm fits that pattern. A pain that is sharp, one-sided or present at rest does not, and that one gets taken seriously below.

Race nerves also reach your sleep. In a survey of 283 elite Australian athletes , 64% said they had slept worse before an important competition at least once in the previous year. The main problem was falling asleep, and the main cause was thinking about the competition.

If you wear a watch or ring overnight, you have better evidence than your legs, provided you read it the way the research does: as trends.

HRV: Read the Weekly Trend

Heart rate variability (HRV) tends to fall under heavy training and rebound when the load comes off. In a study of seven swimmers , HRV dropped across three weeks of intensive training, then climbed through a two-week taper in five of them. The bigger the rebound, the bigger the performance gain, and the speed of the rebound differed from swimmer to swimmer.

Single readings are noisy. A study of 21 triathletes  found that one HRV reading a week missed changes that a weekly average of daily readings picked up. In a case study of two elite triathletes , the one who raced poorly, was diagnosed as non-functionally overreached and then developed shingles had a seven-day rolling HRV average that slid steadily towards the race. The other athlete’s stayed flat.

What to look for: a weekly HRV average that holds steady or climbs back towards your normal range as the taper goes on. What to ignore: one low morning on its own.

A High HRV Is Not Automatically Good News

In that 21-triathlete study, the athletes pushed into functional overreaching showed their HRV going up during the overload weeks, with a lower resting heart rate, and the HRV pattern reversed during the taper. A very high HRV at the end of a brutal block can be a fatigue signal rather than a freshness one.

So do not panic if your HRV climbs less than you expected in taper week, or eases back from a peak you hit in your hardest days. Judge it against your usual range and what your training has been doing.

HRV Can Dip in the Final Days

A 2025 study of 11 state- to international-level swimmers  followed them into the trials for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. It was small and descriptive, but the swimmers who swam well showed higher parasympathetic activity early in the taper, then more sympathetic activity in the run-in to competition.

A small HRV dip in the last two or three days, with a normal resting heart rate and no symptoms, fits that picture. A slide that started a week ago does not.

Resting Heart Rate and Form

Compare your resting heart rate each morning with your own normal band. If it ran unusually low during your hardest weeks, which is what the overreached triathletes showed, a drift back towards your usual band in the taper is not the pattern to worry about.

A run of mornings clearly above your band while you are training less is a different story, because acute infections can raise resting heart rate . In a study of 3,318 smartwatch wearers , alerts built on heart rate and step data flagged 80% of the COVID-19 infections among them, with the earliest signals at a median of three days before symptoms. Stress, alcohol and travel set the same alerts off too, less often, which is why one high morning proves little.

Form is the number that should look best. As your load drops, fatigue falls faster than fitness, so form rises through the taper. Your fitness number will slip a little, because recent load is lower, and that slip is the model doing arithmetic.

Judge the Easy Run After the Warm-Up

Stiff, heavy early kilometres are a classic taper complaint, and a run that loosens up is going fine.
