Deleting Your Account Does Not Delete What Your AI Read

Delete ChatGPT data, Claude chats and your app account in the right order. What erasure removes, what OpenAI may keep, and what no deletion can undo.

Deleting Your Account Does Not Delete What Your AI Read

Deleting your account with a fitness app cuts ChatGPT and Claude off from your training data at once, but it cannot take back anything they already read. That copy sits in your chats with the assistant, under your contract with OpenAI or Anthropic, so to delete ChatGPT data or Claude data you have to do it on their side as well.

We are writing this as the app on the other end of that connection. Kracey’s coach reads your training through intervals.icu, and you can let Claude or ChatGPT read the same data through our connector. Our own privacy policy says it plainly: deleting your Kracey account disconnects every assistant, and neither one can be made to forget what it has already read. This page covers what each deletion removes, what it leaves behind, and the order to do it in.

Key Takeaways

  • Deleting your Kracey account erases your account, plan, race history and coach memory, and disconnects every assistant. It cannot recall what an assistant has already read.
  • OpenAI’s App Developer Terms (section 1.3) say OpenAI may continue to use prior App Responses after an app is removed, under its terms with you.
  • ChatGPT deletes an account’s data within 30 days, except a limited set it may keep where the law requires or permits.
  • Anthropic says a deleted Claude chat will not train future models, but data already in a training run or a trained model stays there.
  • Delete on the assistant side first, then delete the app account. Doing it the other way round leaves the assistant’s copy untouched.

What Deleting Your Kracey Account Erases

Deleting your Kracey account erases your account, your plan, your race history and your coach’s memory, and cancels any subscription. Only paid invoices are kept, because bookkeeping law requires it, plus a suppression record so no bot messages you again after erasure. It cannot be undone, and it works whether or not you pay.

You can do it with /delete in the Telegram chat (you confirm twice) or in Settings (you type DELETE). If you want a copy first, /export sends you a JSON file with your account, race results, coach memory and recent conversation. The details are on our your data page .

Two things stay where they are, because they were never ours to delete:

  • Your watch data. Your sessions live in intervals.icu and on the platform your watch syncs to. Kracey only reads them and never writes anything back, so deleting Kracey leaves them exactly as they were.
  • What an assistant already read. Deleting the account ends every assistant connection, so ChatGPT or Claude cannot fetch anything new. What they fetched before is in your chats with them, and our privacy policy  says we cannot recall it.

What Your Assistant Keeps After You Delete Kracey

Whatever ChatGPT or Claude read from your training stays in those chats until you delete it there. When you connect an assistant, it is a recipient you chose, not a company processing data for us, so the copy it holds is governed by your agreement with that company, usually on servers in the United States.

OpenAI writes this into the contract it sets for app developers. Section 1.3 of its App Developer Terms  says: “Upon termination of the Terms, or if you remove an App from the Services, we may continue to use prior App Responses”. It adds that this use follows “our terms with our Users”, which may include using the content “to provide, maintain, develop, and improve our Services.”

In plain terms, the app leaving ChatGPT does not pull its answers out of your chats. This is the same rule as everything else you type into ChatGPT: once it is in the conversation, ChatGPT’s own settings and deletion tools decide what happens to it, and the app has no say.

Kracey connects to ChatGPT today as a custom MCP server you add yourself, and our listed ChatGPT app is still in OpenAI’s review. Either way the result is the same: what lands in your chat is yours to delete in ChatGPT, not ours. What the connector can read in the first place, and the separate tick for heart rate, HRV and sleep, is on the connector page .

How to Delete ChatGPT Data That Came from an App

To delete ChatGPT data that came from a fitness app, delete the chats that used it, delete any memories ChatGPT saved from them, and switch off model training if you keep the account. To remove everything, delete the ChatGPT account. Each step reaches something the others do not.

Delete the Chats and the Memories

Deleting a chat removes it from your account straight away. OpenAI says deleted chats are permanently removed within 30 days, unless they were already de-identified and disassociated from your account, or must be kept for security or legal reasons.

Deleting a chat does not delete the memories ChatGPT saved from it. A question like “why has my resting heart rate been up all week?” can leave a note behind, so open Settings, Personalisation, Memory, Manage memories, and remove anything that came from your training. Our ChatGPT privacy settings checklist  walks through each setting in order.

Take Lena, who connects her watch data to ChatGPT through an app to ask about a half marathon build, then deletes her app account once the race is done. Her five chats about that block are still in her sidebar, with her heart-rate and sleep figures quoted in the replies, and ChatGPT’s memory still holds “training for a half marathon, resting HR usually around 48”. Deleting the app account touches none of it. Deleting the five chats removes them from her account, and the memory is a sixth deletion of its own.

Delete Your ChatGPT Account

On the web, open your account menu, then Settings, then Account, and choose Delete next to Delete account; you confirm by typing DELETE. In the iOS app it sits under Data controls, and on Android under Settings, Data controls. According to OpenAI’s help article on deleting your account , it deletes your data within 30 days, “except we may retain a limited set of data for longer where required or permitted by law.”

Three practical points from the same article. Deleting cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but not one bought through Apple, so cancel that first. You can use the same email address again after 30 days. And if you cannot sign in, you can ask for deletion through OpenAI’s Privacy Portal at privacy.openai.com, as long as you can verify the email or phone number on the account.

What No ChatGPT Deletion Undoes

If model training was switched on when you asked about your training, deleting the chat now does not take it back out of a model. OpenAI’s article on model training says that after you opt out, “we won’t use your new conversations to improve our models”. It says nothing about removing what a model already learned, and none of OpenAI’s help pages we read promises that. The reasons are in our guide to whether it is safe to connect training data to ChatGPT .

How to Delete Claude Data

Deleting a Claude chat removes it from your history straight away and from Anthropic’s back-end systems within 30 days. Anthropic is the more explicit of the two about training: a deleted chat “will not be used to train future models”, but “Your data will still be included in model training runs that are already in progress, or in models that have been trained.”

That second sentence is the honest version of what OpenAI leaves unsaid, and it is in Anthropic’s data retention article . The same page sets out two longer retention periods worth knowing:

  • With the training setting on, Anthropic may keep your chats in a de-identified form for up to five years in its training pipelines.
  • If a chat is flagged under its usage policy, inputs and outputs are kept for up to two years and the safety classification scores for up to seven.

Deleting your Claude account is permanent and you lose your conversations and projects, so export first if you want them. If you pay for Pro or Max, cancel the subscription in Billing before you delete. How the two assistants compare on training, memory and retention is set out side by side in Claude vs ChatGPT for health data .

The Order to Delete In

Delete on the assistant side first and the app last, because deleting the app does nothing on the assistant side and is easy to treat as the end of the job. This is the full sequence for leaving Kracey and clearing what an assistant read:

  1. Export from Kracey if you want a record. Send /export in the chat. Deletion cannot be undone, so this is the last chance.
  2. Delete the chats in ChatGPT or Claude that used your training data. Search for the race, the session or the metric you asked about.
  3. Delete the memories those chats left. In ChatGPT this is Manage memories; deleting a chat does not do it for you.
  4. Switch off model training if you keep the assistant account. It protects what you type from now on and nothing before.
  5. Delete your Kracey account. /delete in the chat or in Settings. It disconnects every assistant in the same step.
  6. Decide about the assistant account itself. Deleting it removes the rest within 30 days, with the exceptions above.

Your sessions in intervals.icu and on your watch platform are untouched by all six steps. If you want those gone, that is a separate deletion on each of those platforms.

Can the Right to Be Forgotten Reach an AI Model?

The right to be forgotten reaches the account data and the chats an AI company stores about you. Whether it reaches what a trained model has already learned is unsettled, and no help page from OpenAI or Anthropic promises it.

If you live in the UK or the EU, GDPR’s right to erasure (Article 17, and the same right under UK GDPR) lets you ask any company holding your personal data to delete it where, for example, you have withdrawn consent or it is no longer needed. The company normally has one month to answer. The ICO’s guide to the right to erasure  explains when it applies. Our guide to AI health data in the US and the EU  covers why heart rate and sleep data get extra protection there.

The open question is the model. European regulators, in the EDPB’s Opinion 28/2024 of 17 December 2024, said a model is only outside the rules when extracting personal data from it is very unlikely, and that has to be judged case by case. That is a long way from a button that removes your resting heart rate from a model. So treat the self-service deletion tools as the part you control, and switch training off before you ask, rather than counting on erasure afterwards.

For Kracey, /delete is the erasure tool, and anything else under GDPR goes to hello@kracey.com, answered within one month.

FAQ

Delete in the Right Place

To delete ChatGPT data that came from a training app, you need three deletions, not one: the chats and memories in the assistant, the assistant’s training switch or account, and the app account last. The app can cut the connection. Only you, in ChatGPT or Claude, can clear what is already in the chat.

The least data you can hand over is none at all. The HYROX pace calculator  turns a goal time into splits with no account and no email.

If you do want a coach to read your training, Kracey’s coach works in Telegram, reads your sessions through intervals.icu, and keeps heart rate, HRV and sleep behind a separate tick for any assistant you connect. You get 14 free days, no card, and they start when your coach can see your training. Meet your coach .
