Before you connect a fitness app to ChatGPT, choose what the app may share, then work through five ChatGPT privacy settings: turn off “Improve the model for everyone”, decide what Memory may keep, use Temporary Chat for one-off questions, delete chats you no longer need, and disconnect the app when you are done. Do them in that order, and do the first two before your first question, because each setting only protects what comes after it.
This page is the checklist. If you want the reasons behind each step, what ChatGPT Health does and does not cover, and why deleting a chat is not the same as undoing it, they are in our guide to whether it is safe to connect your training data to ChatGPT .
Key Takeaways
- “Improve the model for everyone” is on by default for personal ChatGPT plans, and it is the first thing to switch off, under Settings, Data controls.
- Memory and model training are separate controls, so switching one off leaves the other exactly as it was.
- Temporary Chat keeps a conversation out of your history, out of Memory and out of training, and it is deleted after 30 days.
- Deleting a chat does not delete the memories ChatGPT saved from it, and archiving a chat does not delete it at all.
- The strongest setting sits outside ChatGPT: the scope you allow on the fitness app’s consent screen, where heart and recovery data can stay off.
The ChatGPT Privacy Settings Checklist
Six checks, in the order to do them, starting before the app is connected. The whole list takes about five minutes on a laptop or in the app.
- Choose what the app shares on its consent screen, before it connects.
- Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings, Data controls.
- Decide what Memory may keep under Settings, Personalisation, Memory.
- Use Temporary Chat for one-off questions about an injury, an illness or a bad week.
- Delete chats you no longer need, one at a time or all at once.
- Disconnect the app when you stop using it.
Each step is below with the menu path. ChatGPT moves its menus from time to time, so if a label reads slightly differently in your version (the app spells it “Personalization”), the setting itself is the same.
Step 1: Choose What the App Shares Before It Connects
The first privacy setting sits outside ChatGPT, in the scope you allow on the fitness app’s consent screen. Whatever you leave unticked never reaches ChatGPT, so no setting inside ChatGPT has to protect it.
Most training questions need sessions, pace and volume, not your heart. When you add Kracey to ChatGPT as a custom MCP server , the consent screen shows two kinds of data:
- Training data (sessions and laps, pace, distance and volume, best efforts and race predictions) is always included.
- Heart and recovery data (heart rate and HR zones, VO2max, load, sleep, HRV and resting heart rate) is a separate tick, and it stays off unless you choose it.
Leave the second box empty unless your question needs it. Your conversations with the Kracey coach, what the coach remembers about you, and anything you told it about an injury or illness are never shared through any scope. The full list of tools and the scope each one needs is in the connector docs .
Step 2: Turn Off “Improve the Model for Everyone”
Open Settings, then Data controls, and switch off “Improve the model for everyone”. OpenAI turns it on by default for personal plans (Free, Plus and Pro), and while it is on, your chats can be used to train future models.
Do this before you connect the app and before your first question. The setting applies to your whole account on every device, and it works forward only: it does not reach back into chats from before you changed it. Your chats still appear in your history afterwards. They are just no longer used for training. OpenAI documents the setting in its Data controls help article .
Step 3: Manage ChatGPT Memory
Open Settings, then Personalisation, then Memory, and decide what ChatGPT may remember about you between chats. Memory is a separate control from training, so Step 2 does not touch it.
You have three levels, from lightest to strictest:
- Review and delete entries. Open Manage memories and remove anything health related. Check it after any chat about an injury, an illness or a medication.
- Turn off “Reference saved memories”. ChatGPT stops saving and using memories in new chats.
- Turn off “Reference chat history”. ChatGPT stops drawing on your past conversations as well.
Memory often saves things you never asked it to keep, so a question like “why has my resting heart rate been up all week?” can leave a note behind. If you want ChatGPT to remember your race date but not your sore Achilles, keep Memory on and delete the entries you do not want.
Step 4: Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat for One-Off Questions
Start a new chat and choose Temporary Chat at the top of the screen before you type. A temporary chat does not appear in your history, does not create memories, is not used for training, and is deleted after 30 days.
Use it for the questions you would not want on file: a niggle you are worried about, a week of bad sleep, a medication and how it affects your heart rate. OpenAI may still review a temporary chat for abuse during those 30 days, so it is private rather than invisible.
Step 5: Delete ChatGPT History You No Longer Need
To delete one chat, open the menu next to it in the sidebar and choose Delete. To delete every chat, open Settings, then Data controls, then Delete all chats. Deleted chats leave your account straight away and are permanently removed from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days, with exceptions for chats already de-identified or kept for security or legal reasons, as OpenAI’s deletion article sets out.
Two things deleting does not do:
- It does not delete saved memories. Go back to Step 3 and remove any memory that came from the chat.
- It does not undo training. If a chat was used before you switched training off, deleting it now removes it from your history only.
Archiving is not deleting. An archived chat is hidden from the sidebar and kept in your account, so archive only what you still want.
Step 6: Disconnect the App When You Are Done
Disconnect the fitness app from its own settings when you stop using it, so ChatGPT can no longer fetch anything new. For Kracey, sign in, open Settings, then Connected assistants, and disconnect ChatGPT. It stops working at once.
Then remove the app from ChatGPT’s list of plugins as well, so it no longer appears when you type @. Disconnecting stops new reads. It does not remove anything already in your chats, which is what Step 5 is for. Deleting your Kracey account also ends every assistant connection.
FAQ
Most of them are under Settings, Data controls, which holds the model training switch and the options to delete or archive all chats. Memory sits separately, under Settings, Personalisation, Memory. Temporary Chat is not a setting: you choose it at the top of a new chat.
The switch that stops training is "Improve the model for everyone", not your chat history. With it off, your chats stay in your history but are not used for training. Temporary Chat goes further for a single conversation: no history, no memory and no training.
Yes, at least the first two. Pace and volume are less sensitive than heart rate or sleep, but anything ChatGPT uses in a reply becomes part of the conversation, and the conversation follows your training setting.
No. Memories are stored separately from chats, so deleting a chat leaves the memories saved from it in place. Delete them one by one under Settings, Personalisation, Memory, Manage memories.
ChatGPT can no longer fetch anything new from the app. Anything it already used in a reply stays in that chat until you delete the chat, and any memory it saved stays until you delete the memory. ---
Settings First, Then Connect
The order is the whole trick with ChatGPT privacy settings: choose the scope, switch off training, set Memory, then ask your first question. Use Temporary Chat for the sensitive ones, delete what you no longer need, and disconnect the app when you are finished with it.
If you would rather none of this were your job, that is how the Kracey coach works. It is an AI HYROX, running and endurance coach in Telegram that reads your training through intervals.icu and messages you first, and your data is stored in Frankfurt and never used to train AI models, as our data page sets out. You get 14 free days, no card, and they start when your coach can see your training.
